Peace Building and Conflict Transformation

Persistent natural resources conflicts pitting mostly different communities has over the years resulted in loss of human lives, displacements and loss of livelihoods opportunities. Violent extremism has emerged as a greater threat with increasing cases of youth radicalization and a clear risk of terror networks riding on other forms of violence and conflicts to achieve their objectives.

NOWSUD supported Amani clubs in schools to build a career wheel for 3 schools in isiolo to promote peace building and co-existance within pupils in schools in promoting peace clubs in schools.

Sexual & Gender Based Violence Program

NOWSUD has an internal Policy to get involved in aspects that affects women, children and youth since they form the bulk of the vulnerable who suffers the most in the face of any form of violence against women and girl child is a public health issue. NOWSUD also uses integrated approach towards VAWG. NOWSUD has invested heavily in restructuring Nyumba Kumi Clusters into manageable community policing units with unique identifier names and a substantive Cluster Head. Through these units, which comprises of a few households, NOWSUD has launched a digital platform called ONGEA USIKIKE GBV PLATFORM where the GBV survivors can report i at the same time NOWSUD ntends to use a Mobile App platform (M-Jirani) designed to improve citizens’ collaboration with security agents to integrate SGBV into community policing in homes,social and public places like schools and work places by ensuring:

  • Community (Nyumba Kumi Cluster Members) participation in reporting SGBV cases which are on the rise in households.
  • Strengthen the response of police to incidence of SGBV in real time. The App will be linked to Joint Operations Command Center at Isiolo Police Station for 24 hour response.
  • Give a platform to other local SGBV actors to reach as many residents as possible.
  • Social and political empowerment of women and youth.
  • Support and address political, leadership and gender equity and responsibility.
  • Violence against women and girls is an health issue support women to be vocal and visible.
  • Address psychological trauma and stigma.
  • Early marriages and Female Genital Mutilation
  • Care for survivors - Legal advices
  • Polygamy and wife beating
  • Education and intervention sexual health in schools.
  • Economic empowerment through skills development in NOWSUD skills development center.

Livelihood and Youth Engagement

With the national youth unemployment levels still very high, the case of Isiolo County is compounded by high number of youth without employable skills which pre-disposes them to being used by planners of conflicts including violent extremists. NOWSUD’s approach to securing sustainable livelihood opportunities target, women, PWDs and the high-risk youth with deliberate focus on reformed street youth, those from very vulnerable households and young single mothers struggling to bring up their children through skills development.

Basic Education and Skills Transfer program

Poor academic performance in national examinations with a county mean grade of D- which is way below the minimum entry for most formal courses means majority of Form 4 leavers don’t proceed for further training for formal employment or even self-employment.This is done through skills development in NOWSUDs skills development center. NOWSUD supports increased involvement of parents through Parents Associations, establishment of career wheels in schools and a skills transfer center.

Skills Development and Livelihoods

Nowsud has been implementing the PSS program established in 2015 supported by DANIDA through its partner ACT! the program workdthroughgrass roots civil society partners and national and county state officers to build the capacity of the community to manage conflict and counter violence extremism. Notable aspect of the program the programe is the skills transfer established to assist vulnerable youth learn skills that can allow them engage competitively in job market the tailoring and leather works skills centres have provided products that are well received in the market and thus provide avenue for income.

Environmental Protection and conservation

In collaboration with Ewaso nyiro North Development Authority create awareness on afforastion and tree planting and land decradation and natural resource managemnt and pollution.

Water Sanitation and Hygien WASH Program

The main aim of this program is improve health and quality livelihood by providing water and public health and cleanliness through health education in schools and public to reduce poverty.
